Synod Pilgrimage Day 2
Morning prayers included a reading from Proverbs 8.
When we started our morning’s journey from Scaling Dam, we spent the first hour walking in silence. During that time Carla Grosch-Miller composed the following lines as she walked – lines which she shared with her fellow pilgrims during prayers the following morning.
Wisdom walks in silence,
in wonder to behold
the greening leaf and purple flower
proclaiming June so bold.
Wisdom walks in chatter:
the birds are on the wing.
While wild geese honk encouragement
the skylarks start to sing.
Wisdom walks awake, aware,
her eyes don’t miss a thing;
she knows the way the wind blows,
she dodges nettles’ sting.
Wisdom breathes and wisdom sighs,
her purview over all
gives her unbounded pleasure,
sharpens her sense of call.
Wisdom pleads and wisdom cries,
Wake up! The time is here!
The day grows short, the hour is come,
what you must do is clear.
Wisdom weeps and wisdom groans,
whilst we prepare for war
and close our borders, shrink our hearts
and fear the distant shore.
Wisdom creeps into our dreams,
she waits outside our door.
She won’t relent, she won’t give up
until we beg for more.
Wisdom walks intrepidly
on paths the saints have trod.
And where she steps wild flowers bloom
within the mind of God.
