A dozen of us would-be disciples, together with our retreat leader Rachel Poolman, saw in the beginning of Lent at Shepherds Dene, the beautiful retreat house set in the Tyne Valley close to Riding Mill.
We were drawn from churches across the synod – a mixture of active and retired ministers and other church members. As seems to be usual for our annual synod retreat, some participants were old hands, while others (just at first feeling a little uncertain about it all) were here for the first time.
Our thanks to Rachel who led us so sensitively through the two days, as we focused on the gifts that we receive from God and are able to share with each other. And who also assured us that a retreat should be fun!
Hence the jigsaw, the saxophone, the colouring book, and other glimpses of the time we’d shared, gathered in front of the communion table as we came together for our closing eucharist.
Next year we’re at Ampleforth (we tend to alternate between the two venues), where there’s certainly plenty of room for more. If you’re part of our synod, why not join us?
