We had an early start for the English service at 7am (or thereabouts). Lis and Meg led the worship and there were around 50 present, mainly young people and they all sat at the front! We sang good old fashioned English hymns ending with Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so! As people left and shook our hands, they then stood in line next to us so everyone was able to warmly greet each other in turn (we’ll try this at the next Synod!).
Our 10am service was with Pastor Ventura at Maxaquene where Meg preached to 300 people and we received another incredibly warm welcome. John has made several crosses from wood from Jesmond pews and we presented the church with one. (We also gave one to the English church). Three different choirs sang beautifully and we all enjoyed the singing of the whole congregation which was unaccompanied. The highlight of the service was the offering of the tithes with much singing, joy, laughter and dancing. At one point Helen held the basket to receive yet another offering and they said they wanted her to stay longer as folk were very generous. After the service, some of the elders were asking us how to raise money because they need to extend their building as they have so many members!!
