Former Northern Synod Moderator David Jenkins was ordained to Christian ministry on the Feast of the Epiphany 1968. January 6th 2018 saw his 50th anniversary celebrated with a Songs of Praise service at Providence Church, New Mills in Derbyshire, and the following day through a service at at Marple United Reformed Church when the Revd Tony Burnham, former General Secretary of the URC and North Western Synod Moderator, and a close colleague of David’s, was the guest preacher.
Among the congregation on the Sunday at Marple were Carol and Donald Dixon, members of our Morpeth church, who knew David well during his 12 years (1987-99) here in Northern Synod – a time which he has described as a very special part of his ministry. Carol was part of the synod office team during those years, and she has reported on the service.
“We had a wonderful time at the special service, led by their minister the Revd Alison Termie. It included a light-hearted welcome by the minister and an uplifting message by Tony based on Ephesians on proclaiming God’s message. It was full of wonderful music – a choir introit organised and conducted by David, a hymn written by him on the theme of Epiphany, and a beautiful duet between the organist and David’s daughter Karen on flute, following the prayers of intercession.
“The service ended with a presentation of flowers to Margie (‘Behind every great man is an even greater woman’) and was followed by refreshments and fun looking through David’s books of photographic memories, from his call to Morley, to his retirement from Wilmslow and all things in between, including some interesting photos of his time as Assembly Moderator. All in all it was a very joyful occasion with plenty of opportunities for thanking God for David’s ministry. The man at the centre of it all remained humble and grateful throughout and enjoyed celebrating with us all.”
