Revd Dr Martin Luther King 50 years on

April 26 @ 6:00 pm - 7:15 pm

A Memorial Service, on the exact 50th anniversary of the Memorial Service for Revd Dr Martin Luther King at St Thomas’ in 1968. The Vice Chancellor, Chris Day, and local MP Chi Onwurah are doing readings; the Voices of Virtue group will present their poems on race and youth in Newcastle; and the preacher is Revd Jeffrey Brown, an American Baptist minister of one of Dr King’s former churches and architect of “The Boston Miracle”, when the rate of violent crime was reduced in Boston by 79%. The service will mark 50 years since Revd King’s death, and ask how his life can continue to challenge us to work for the eradication of racism, poverty and war.

The service will also see launch of the exhibition which is the culmination of Freedom City 2017, which will be open in St Thomas’ for 3 weeks from then.

There will be refreshments following the service, to which all are welcome, of any faith or none.

The service is led by Revd Catherine Lack (Newcastle University/St Thomas’) and is a collaboration between St Thomas’ Church and the Martin Luther King Peace Committee. It is sponsored by Freedom City 2017.
