The congregation at our Waddington Street, Durham church welcomed the Assembly Moderator on June 11th. The Revd Kevin Watson, born and brought up in County Durham, returned to his home turf to preach and preside at the church’s quarterly communion service.
But it was a special Sunday in more than one sense, as one of the congregation was celebrating a 90th birthday. Alan Smith, a retired minister, presided at a fund-raising lunch held in the hall after the service, thanking members of his family and the members of what he referred to as his church family for their good wishes and participation in the celebrations. “Not a birthday, but rather a birthweek”, as he put it. The lunch generously contributed to the church’s fund-raising efforts his year for the Christian Blind Mission, which happens to be a cause close to Alan’s own heart.
Later in the week Kevin and his wife, Lynne, visited the Waddington Street Resource Centre next door to the church, met with elders from Waddington and some of the neighbouring URC congregations, and visited the ecumenical partnership in Crook.
