Music to reflect on Advent
The song of the angels
The Angels appear lots throughout our Christmas story – appearing to both Mary and Joseph and of course the shepherds – their message is always the same – to Joseph, to Mary, to the shepherds. Do not be afraid and then a message good news! Good news that a young woman will bear God’s son and to the shepherds that they shall find that baby – messages of hope – of wondrous news!
But the message of the angel isn’t just ‘do not be afraid’ there is always a message from God, a comfort, a challenge, a task! For Mary it was to become the mother of Jesus, knowing that the child was from God! For the shepherds it was go and see this child who will change the world. So, who are the angels in your lives? Who are the ones who bring comfort to you, who whisper ‘Do not be afraid’ to you? Who are the ones who bring a message from God to you? Who bring a word of comfort, of hope, of challenge to you?
I was taught this little Christmas song by the person who composed it – Pablo Sosa. When he sung it to us he got us to imagine the angels on the hillside singing to the shepherds, telling them the story of a baby born and singing God’s praises – Gloria! Their voices becoming quieter and quieter as they fly away.. Gloria, Gloria Gloria….
