Music to reflect on Advent
As Joseph went a-walking
We often forget about Joseph – Jesus ‘foster dad’ on earth. Joseph the carpenter who took the shame of his wife to be falling pregnant without good explanation. Who was brave and caring – taking on a child he knew not to be his – teaching him all the things a good father should, taking him to synagogue, teaching him the Hebrew Scriptures, showing him the skills of a trade.
Joseph was called to do ordinary things – to be a dad to a holy child. Not to treat the boy like a king but to give him an ordinary upbringing.
Joseph, like Mary was visited and comforted by an angel – to give him the strength he needed. I love this little quirky carol which tells of Joseph’s encounter. We don’t use it much in our churches but I love it! It’s sung in this version by Annie Lennox – a popstar who has taken this religious song and given her own spin on it. I love the way her version steps out of what we would normally hear (ie carols being sung by choirs) to show us something new!
As Joseph was a walking, he heard an Angel sing;
His song was of the Coming of Christ, our Saviour King.
The good man, long dejected, had knelt to Him Who hears;
The blest refrain now swelling, removes his doubts and fears.
