Music to reflect on Advent
Mary and the angel
One of the highlights of my Advent is hearing the marvellous story of the visit of Gabriel to Mary, a young woman betrothed to Joseph a carpenter. This story has always caught my imagination – was Mary scared? What did the angel look like? Why did Mary say yes? It truly is a wonderful story – Mary is often seen as a lowly woman – but she’s so powerful and her response to the Angel is remarkable – of course she says yes but she says more than this – she proclaims the good news in the song we’ll think about on another day – the magnificat!
For now, let us listen to this recording of Gabriel’s message (a 12/13th Century Basque Carol) sung by a Geordie – Sting and think of the things God is asking us to say yes to.
Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head
“To me be as it pleaseth God,” she said,
“My soul shall laud and magnify his holy name.”
Most highly favoured lady. Gloria!
