Music to reflect on Advent
Soon and very soon
In 1999 – 2000 I spent a year studying at Tainan Theological College in Taiwan as a guest of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan and the Council for World Mission. It was an eventful year for many reasons such as being struck by the biggest earthquake Taiwan had ever had leaving a lot of the island devastated and struggling to rebuild. This was an incredible time of sadness but also hope.
One of the highlights during this time was being taught music and liturgy by some of the world’s most renowned Musicologists and Liturgists.
One of these was Revd Terry MacArthur who was, in 1999, the Worship Consultant for the World Council of Churches. Terry was with us during the period of Advent and I remember very clearly some of his other students leading morning worship in the chapel. I remember it because we sang this song – a gospel song filled with hope and joy with a message that during a time of sorrow we needed to hear. This song echoed around campus for the days after we had sung it in chapel continuing to lift spirits and bring hope.
Soon and very soon we are going to see the king!
No more crying there we are going to see the king!
